The era of Henry Cavill as the Man of Steel is over. Just a month ago, Black Adam’s post-credits scene re-introduced Superman to Henry Cavill, standing face-to-face with Dwayne Johnson. Afterwards, Cavill released a statement saying he was back on board for the sake of Man of Steel 2while Johnson was teasing the Black Adam vs. Superman project. All that desire seemed to be put to rest when Warner Bros. Discovery named James Gunn and Peter Safran co-executives of DC Studios. The duo plans to sit down with Warner Bros. CEO David Zaslav. Discovery, in the coming weeks, but one of the first dominoes to fall has already been revealed.
James Gunn announced on Twitter that he met with Henry Cavill to deliver the grim news that WB will be rebooting Superman, which means Cavill will no longer be playing the Man of Steel. However, there are talks that Cavill could play a different DC character down the line.
“I just had a meeting with James Gunn and Peter Safran which is sad news for everyone. I will not be returning as Superman after all,” Henry Cavill wrote in a statement on Instagram. Having asked the studio to announce my return in October, before they were set, this news wasn’t the easiest, but that’s life. A changing of the guard is a thing that happens. I respect that. James and Peter did a world to build. Happy, and happiest of fortunes. For those who have stood by me over the years… We can grieve a little, but then we must remember… Superman is still out there. Whatever he stands for is still out there, and the examples he set for us still out there! It’s too late for me to put on the cap, but what Superman stands for will never happen. It’s been fun riding with all of you, onward and upward.”

Of course, fans have already begun speculating who could replace Henry Cavill as Superman. There is a large group that just wants Cavill to stay in the role, while other fans are ruling out some interesting possibilities.
